Situated 1000m-above sea level, deep in a mountain valley, the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa is not, at least on first impression, the most welcoming city. The winding, narrow streets are thick with motorized traffic, and the sidewalks full to the gills with shoppers and loafers.
Surrounded by reminders of its past - crumbling colonial buildings and decaying nineteenth-century mansions – the city today is a vibrant, noisy place. A handful of churches and fantastic new museums, as well as some smaller quirkier ones, will easily keep you entertained for a day or two. Given a little time, you’ll see Tegucigalpa has a lot to offer.
Since the 1998 hurricane that destroyed much of the city, Tegucigalpa has a redeveloped with new buildings and roads.
The commercial centre of the city is within the Boulevard Morazan where there are good shops and restaurants. The historic centre is nearby with the cathedral and the old church Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de los Dolores. This area is great for just having a wander and taking in the buildings.
There are many parks around the city; the parque de la Concordia has miniatures replicas of Mayan temples.
If you're looking to pick up some local produce and crafts head to the central market.
Whilst in Tegucigalpa take a trip to La Tigra National Park, the small mountain towns of Santa Lucia, Valle de Angeles, Yuscaran or Danli.
