Santiago de Chile, the capital of Chile, is a modern metropolis with a magnificent backdrop of snow-capped mountains of the Andes. The one museum to see in Santiago is the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolumbino that houses 4500 years of pre-Columbian civilisation. The Chinchorro mummies, 1000 years older than the Egyptian mummies, are not to be missed.
The Bellavista and Barrio Suecia neighbourhoods are the place to be for nightlife and restaurants - they are both bright and colourful areas.
For a great view of the city and the impressive surrounding mountains take the funicular to Cerro San Cristobal. You will also find here Parque Metropolitano - Santiago's largest open space.
There are excellent hiking opportunities in the mountains and of course the ski season operates from June to October. For wine lovers the Concha y Toro vineyards and the Maipo Valley are not far away.
