San Salvador

The capital of El Salvador, San Salvador, is located in a valley at the foot of the San Salvador volcano. A large metropolis with lots of traffic, San Salvador, has a centre where the Avenida Espana crosses Calle Delgado and all the important buildings are situated.

The recently completed Catedral Metropolitana marks the centre of the city's street grid with its yellow and blue dome.

An excellent museum worth visiting is the National Museum of Anthropology. Most of the country's archaeological finds are exhibited here although details are in Spanish.

Parque Balboa is a great place to get good views of the city and to relax away from the city traffic.

There are many day trips available from San Salvador including a visit to Lake Ilopango, the San Salvador volcano and the Izalco volcano.
