Asunción

Though it’s political and commercial heart of Paraguay, Paraguay’s riverside capital retains the sedate atmosphere of a provincial backwater and an old-fashioned feel, with elegant nineteenth-century public buildings and some interesting though rather militaristic monuments and museums, dedicated above all the former dictators and was heroes.

The pretty countryside and traditional farming towns of the surrounding rural heartland-including the lace making centre of Itaugua-can be visited on day trips from the city, following a route known as the Cicuito de oro, but none are essential stops.

Cerro Lambaré is a hill located in Lambaré and provides a spectacular spring-time show due to the blossoming Lapacho trees. Parks such as Parque Independecia and Parque Carlos Antonio Lopez provide an insight to typical Paraguayan vegetation which is a popular tourist attraction.

Calle Palma is the main street where the majority of the historical buildings, plazas, shops, restaurants and cafés are situated along. The main attractions to the city pivot around the history of the area with attractions such as Godoi Museum, Manzana de la Rivera (series of restored traditional homes), National Pantheon of the Heroes, Metropolitan Cathedral and National de Bella Artes (displaying paintings from 19th Century), to name a few.

The nightlife consists of clubs and various theatrical and musical perfomances. The clubs are located in two main areas of the city; downtown city and the areas of Manora and Las Carmelitas.
