Some 50 km from La Ceiba, Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands, a curving ridget hump almost 50 Km ling and 5 km across at its widest point. Unfortunately; Roatan can be a hard place to enjoy if you are on a budget.
Unless you restrict yourself to the very cheapest places, you should expect your spending to go way above average. The island’s accommodating, geared towards more upmarket tourists, mostly come in form of all-inclusive luxury resort packages, although there are a few good deals to be found, especially in West End. Roatan is superb diving destination, but also offers some great hiking as well as the chance to do nothing except laze on a beach. Coxen Hole is the island’s commercial centre.
The island offers some of the best scuba diving in the world and is a great location for relaxation. It offers all the usual beach activities including swimming, snorkelling, fishing and boating.
From the West End you can participate in island tours so you won't miss out on what the rest of the island has to offer. You can hire scooters, motorcycles or bicycles if you want to explore the island at your own pace and find your own quiet secluded beach.
The Sandy Bay area of Roatan is the cultural centre of the island. The Marine Reserve, Institute of Marine Sciences, The Roatan Museum and the Carambola Gardens are all here.
