Spectacularly set in a deep canyon at an altitude of over 3500 m, Bolivia’s de facto the highest capital in the world. With a largely indigenous Anymara population, it’s also amongst the most fascinating: a post-modern crucible where modern banks and government offices coexist with vibrant streets markets selling all manner of ritual paraphernalia for appeasing the spirits and mountain gods.
The capital has great architecture and it is just nice to wander the streets taking it all in. Take a walk through the witches market too and see what weird and wonderful objects you can find.
The eastern side of the Andes are only a days hike away and three hours drive from La Paz you can reach the interesting village of Oruru. The Valley of the moon is a magical landscape that should not be missed.
