Spilling across a highlands basin, surrounded on three sides by jagged hills and volcanic cones, Guatemala City is now the largest city in Central America, home to over 3 million people. Characterized by and intensity and vibrancy that simultaneously facinate and horrify, Guatemala’s capital is a shapleless and swelling metropolitan mass, and the undisputed centre of the country’s politics, power and wealth.
However, once you get used to the place, Guatemala city can offer some surprises, including a satisfying variety of restaurants, some great authentic bars and a sprinkling of interesting sights, In addition, there are the home comforts of multiplex cinemas and shopping malls, plus some good places to stay, and, of course, plenty of welcoming faces.
There are two main museums that are worth taking in. The Museo Nacional de Arqueologica y Etnologia and the Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno, which both have excellent Mayan artefacts and 20th Century Guatemalan art.
Zona 1 has the National Palace, which requires a booking for tours, and on the other side of the plaza is the Catedral.
Nightlife is best in Zona 10 where there are many restaurants and bars to entertain you.
