Flores

Despite the legions of tourists that pass through Flores, the gateway to the Mundo Maya and the capital of Peten, it has nonetheless retained and easy pace and sedate, Old World atmosphere. This tiny Island on Lago de Peten Itza has historically been a natural point of settlement.

It remained the capital of the Itza Maya until 1697, when the Spanish facially forced the town under their control. Today the lake’s shores are hosting a more cosmopolitan crowd. Across the causeway, Santa Elena and adjoining Santa Benito are home to the gritty business of Guatemalan life with sprawling markets and multiple hardware stores.
Flores boasts the lion’s share of quality restaurants and decent budget accommodation.

 

Other places to visit on Lake Peten Itza include a zoo on the island of Petencito, which has numerous wildlife trails and hiring a ‘launcha' (motorised wooden boat) to get there is a great experience.

Nearby is ARCAS, a wildlife rescue centre for macaws, parrots, jaguars and more. Not far from here is San Miguel, where you can climb up El Mirador for a brilliant view over Lake Peten Itza.
