The ancient heart of the Inca Empire, Cuzco is Peru’s most famous attraction and one of the most compelling destinations in all Latin America. A beautiful colonial city built amidst the magnificent ruined temples and palaces of the Incas (and still largely inhabited by Quechua-speaking descendants), Cuzco is surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery and remarkable Inca archaeological sites, including the monumental fortress of Sacsayhuaman, which towers above the city and the numerous temples and palaces of the nearby Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Cuzco is also a great base for trekking, climbing, mountain biking and white water rafting trips, and for expeditions into the rainforests of the southern Peruvian Amazon. With all this plus good tourist infrastructure, a lively nightlife scene and some of the most colourful fiestas in the Andes, it’s no wonder many travellers and up staying here much longer then they originally planned.
If you're looking for Indian crafts head to Plaza San Blas to see them being made and there are many shops around here to purchase goods. Otherwise visit some of the local markets for local produce.
The main excursion from Cuzco is to Machu Picchu, the most visited attraction in Peru and one of the most popular archaeological sites in the world. It is about 70 miles from Cuzco and to cram it into one day is a shame. Try to do an overnight tour or even experience the Inca Trail itself.
