Caracas, capital of Venezuela, surrounded by green hills is a place of extreme contrasts - extreme wealth and desperate poverty. Capitolio Nacional occupies a huge area with golden domes.
It is most famous for Salon Eliptico - an oval hall with a mural covered dome. The surrounding halls are decorated with battle scenes to represent Venezuela's fight for Independence.
The Museo de Arte Colonial is housed in a beautiful colonial mansion and occasionally on Sundays you can see chamber music concerts in the old stables. The gardens here are just as magnificent as in the interior of the museum.
La Sabana Grande is a great place for shopping, and in the evenings for socialising in the many bars and restaurants.
El Avila is a very important mountain to the people of Caracas. It is a National Park and many locals take walks up there every day for the fresh air and wonderful views.
An interesting day trip from Caracas would be to Colonia Tovar, a town founded by the Germans with distinctive German features.

Caracas Airport is Venezuela's major international hub, welcoming more than eight million passengers a year. Also known as Simón Bolívar International Airport Maiquetia, the airport is 16 miles north of downtown Caracas.
