Belize is one of the smallest countries in Central America and the least densely populated, with a quarter or a million people occupying and area of Wales. Belize has a very laid back atmosphere with Spanish and English influences.
The Anglo – Caribbean culture, known as Creole, is evident in the country’s biggest city, Belize City, with its balconied clapboard houses, reggae dancehalls and vibrant carnival, held in September. Belize’s biggest attraction is its offshore cayes, which sit on the largest coral reef in the Americas, stretching from Mexico to Honduras. The whole area is a protected marine park, teeming with hundreds of species of brightly coloured fish and other marine creatures. Crystal water means that the scuba diving and snorkelling around the cayes are superb.
Belize is one of the safest countries in Latin America – crime against tourists is minimal and its capital city, Belmopan is one of the safest, thought dullest, in central America.
Xunantunich (Stone Maiden) is an archaeological site near the Belize River. Originally a ceremonial centre, it was deserted after it was destroyed by an earthquake around 900 AD. The El Castillo is an impressive 131ft tower rising above the jungle.
Placencia is a relaxing location where you can enjoy the lush paradise and is ideal for exploring wildlife and plant life with an experienced guide. Kayakng is also a good option to explore the beautiful scenery for yourself. Placencia is also a great starting point for a trip to the Cayes.
The Cayes, just west of Belize's barrier reef, are excellent for diving, snorkelling and fishing. The most popular are Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye.
